Tough and chewy PLA from rigid.ink – PLA Plus! #Filaween

rigid.ink’s PLA Plus isn’t any stronger than regular PLA or ABS; but it’s a lot tougher than those two. Never worry about dropping and breaking your prints again!

Rigid.ink’s PLA Plus promises ABS-like strength, while still being based on the popular PLA biopolymer. It sells for 36€ per kg and needs to be printed quite hot, so i used 235°C on the nozzle, 60° on the bed and the same fan settings as for regular PLA. Print quality was decent, and the high temperature seemed to suite the material well. We’re seeing the same pearlescent sheen as with similar modified PLAs however, just to the plain hand it already feels less harsh than most other materials. The measured flex at one kilogram load confirms this, which puts rigid.ink’s PLA Plus in line with copolyesters, which tend to be a bit softer than the targeted ABS reference.

In the strength tests, it flexes and stretches a lot more than other filaments before giving in, however overall, it didn’t take much force to break the parts, delivering particularly underwhelming results when it comes to layer adhesion, which will need some more investigation. For now, i’d recommend going with a copolyester, e.g. rigid.ink’s own PETG, instead, as it’s a material that handles very similarly but provides better strength and toughness overall.
