colorFabb PLA/PHA review – it works! #Filaween

colorFabb is putting its own spin on PLA filament – and it’s subjectively and objectively working out pretty well!

Colorfabb has gathered quite a reputation for their PLA/PHA filaments – it’s a copolymer from PLA and the naturally occurring PHA biopolymer. While this is the natural one, Colorfabb sell a wide range of colors for 48€ per kilogram or a bit less if you buy larger spools. PLA/PHA prints perfectly with any settings that work for regular PLA, i used 210°C, a heated bed at 55°C and the part cooling fan on full blast.

The printed parts end up looking very neat, with crisp details and a flawless surface finish. Only bridges and overhangs get a point deducted each, but they’re very close to scoring full marks. PLA/PHA shows very low stringing and gets a total print quality score of 18 out of 20. It also does well when we look at strength, where it shows high material strength and layer adhesion, deforming quite a bit before breaking. The combined score of 62.5 kg places it in the top group of PLA-based filaments.

It does feel like it’s softening significantly more than other filaments in the heat test with boiling water, but that’s about its only weakness. So overall, while Colorfabb PLA/PHA does come with a fairly high pricetag, it is still a pleasure to print with.
