Proto-pasta’s fluffy Matte Fiber filament review! #Filaween

Composite filaments are awesome – each for their own reasons. This one is so fluffy!

Composite Filaments – they’re a huge thing these days and come in many different varieties.

Whether it’s metal, carbon fiber or other particles, Protopasta has always been at the forefront of their development. Their 86€/kg Matte Fiber HTPLA does not require a hardened or coated nozzle and prints just like a normal PLA at 210C and 55C at the bed. The fiber content makes for prints that are visibly rough and textured, hiding layer seams and other imperfections. It scored only a total of 13 points in the quality tests, so while the overhangs test print came out perfectly, the 3DBenchy already showed some slight imperfections and the fine details test made it clear that the Matte Fiber HTPLA’s tendency to ooze and string and will require more aggressive retract settings. None of the bridges printed cleanly due to the chunky nature of the filament and strength was consistently low, with little layer adhesion and a total score of only 20kg. A higher print temperature might improve this, at the expense of an even lower print quality. To improve strength and temperature stability, this filament can be annealed, just like the Carbon Fiber HTPLA, which will be the topic of another episode.
